Questioning Justice

On September 1st 2010, I started this blog as the ‘Diary of my Last Year’ as a judge. After regaining my freedom of speech on September 1st 2011, the motto became ‘My Sabbatical Year’. Now, a book and many columns later, I want to continue this quest.
‘Justice’ can be viewed as a series of principles, as an organisation, or as a method.
Most principles in a country like Belgium seem to be self-evident but more and more, precious ones endure doubt or even fierce criticism when applied into practice. As if that’s not what they were meant for.
The organisation, on the other hand, was something I always felt uneasy with during my quarter of a century in the ‘pyramid’.
The method at last, was something I could correct myself, focusing on ‘conciliation’. It became with the years an efficient tool and also gave personal satisfaction. Not so much the quantity of my effective conciliations (at least 20.000 out of almost 60.000) during those years was important. The real difference was the turn things took: I ended finally in my last year (in 2011) with more conciliations a year I succeeded in, than the number of real procedures I had to start with in my first year (in 1987).
The motto from now on will surprise nobody: ‘Questioning Justice’.
Reminding politicians of the essential values of our legal system. Putting into question the way judges, public prosecutors and lawyers handle justice. Asking why we favor justice as the cold business of antagonism to the detriment of the human touch of ‘care’.
Even in a society of perfect citizens, conflict will arise, and justice will be needed. Soner or later, it will always become some part of our life. But justice can never be fully rendered, if it is not understood by the parties concerned, and even a wide public. At the same time, citizens are more critical than ever, and rightly so. Their anger is an opportunity for Justice and far better than the indifference that reigned before. Their questions should be answered, and arguments must be given.
A sense of ‘urgency’.
Questions about justice are – certainly in social media - a bit like the ‘blue moon’ on the photo (link here): even if it is not unique and will return, it’s a precious moment not to be lost. It is now and there to answer or warn, or fire a question back. Or a proposal.
I believe in the force of those little drops, even on a rock. I don’t give up what I started, and what fascinates me more than ever: Justice.
So, ‘Questioning Justice’ finally is some kind of an optimism ;-)
